Daily Prompt~ Sweet Sixteen (Delusions Of Grandeur)

Today’s Prompt:

When you were 16, what did you think your life would look like? Does it look like that? Is that a good thing?

When I was sixteen, I had big dreams.  I had the type of childhood where I never had to worry about a roof over my head, food to eat or clothes to wear.  In reality, I was pretty far removed from the real world.

I went to school, I was on the cheerleading squad and spent most of my free time performing in school plays.  I was going to be a big star.

While I hoped to be discovered  by a Hollywood big wig as I was slinging ice cream cones and flipping my ponytail at the Dairy Queen, I knew that it was unlikely.

I didn’t really make any plans for life, just many fantasies about my meteoric rise to fame and fortune and the adoration of millions of fans.

Some of my friends wanted to be doctors or lawyers or much more down to Earth professions.  Things a person could actually attain with hard work, the right education and perseverance.  Not me man!  I was gonna hit the big time.

What a maroon!

My life is nothing like I imagined it to be at sixteen.  If someone would have told me I would marry young, raise three kids and then start all over at the age of 44, ending up marrying again and still living in the town where I grew up, I would have told them they were crazy. (Check it out! That’s one damn fine run-on sentence!)

But I love my life!  I’m married to the most wonderful man, my kids have grown into fine young men, and I’m pursuing interests and hobbies that I love and am truly a happy person.  I wouldn’t change a thing.

Anyway, to all you guys who told me that my big Hollywood dreams wouldn’t ever happen I say, Okay, okay, you were right!  Happy?  I am.

  3. Very cool that you were in school plays. I loved the drama department, but I was in charge of props. I was too afraid to to be in front of an audience. I don’t even remember 16, and I’m not going to try. 😉

  6. I’m desperately trying to remember what things were like and what I was thinking about when I was sixteen. I have a teenage granddaughter coming through the ranks (she’s thirteen but three years go fast).

  7. Although it’s only been 8 years since I was 16……I’m definitely not where I thought I would be, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m happy you’re happy. 🙂

  8. Best laid plans and all…I wager most of us are not where we thought we would be when we were 16. For me, life happened and I am all the better for it! Change of plans, but like you, I am happy too!

    • How right you are. Didn’t someone say that life is what happens while we’re waiting for something better? It’s learning to live within the life you have, and improving and changing it in real ways that makes the difference, not completely wishing for something unreal and unattainable, like we did when we were younger.

  12. My life is nothing like I thought it would be & except for the fact I have great kids, I think I might do things a little differently if I had it all to do again. At 16 I wanted to be an airline stewardess married to a pilot, travelling all over the world, without kids. I would keep my kids if I changed thing though.

Well.....let's hear it!
