Evolution of a masterpiece…GRRRRR!

This is the view I see when sitting in my thinking (smoking) spot….. All serene and junk

Part 2-Formatting

If you haven’t had a chance to read Part 1 of this series,   the delightfully deep piece regarding my ongoing battle with multiple personality disorder, please do so now.  Go on, I’ll wait.  I got all day.

In that piece, I whined about which one of my voices to listen to, and let the lucky winner get all the way to my fingertips.  While I am still struggling with that, and eventually may do multiple blogs in the end, I still have to figure out how I want it/them to look.

I have too much time on my hands at work, and too many thoughts in my head to not do this.   I have tried my hand at blogging before, and had a huge following of 4 readers.  My first thought was to just continue with that one.  When I was unable to access the dashboard, even after mulitple attempts, I decided I must find a new outlet for my rambling.  So way back when, on July  19th, 2012, I decided I would go blog host shopping.

After much Googling, I chose Word Press.  While I’m very glad I did, and it has opened up a whole new world to me, my first look at the Dashboard was daunting.  I looked at many themes, read the Freshly Pressed, dabbled with pictures, etc.

Once again, I felt less than up to the task.  Hmmmm,  I thought writing a blog was about words?  What do I know about building a blog???  Not a damm thing-I soon discovered.  I chose the Oxygen Theme.  It seems to have the look I want.  The sample of this theme is so pretty!!!  How do I make mine look like that?  I don’t know the first thing about widgets.  What the hell is a tag cloud?   Pages, categories, blog roll, feedback, following, twitter, publicize…..SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!!

How do I get readers here, and make them stay long enough to actually read stuff?  I think I have read the support pages more than just about anything else here.  Through trial and error, a whole lot of hitting the “preview” button, adding and deleting and a few wonderful ” A ha!” lightbulb moments,  I think I may just be getting the hang of this blog building thingy.

Adding pictures seems to be an ever present hurdle.  I want it bigger, I want it smaller,  Waa-haaaa-haaa! It won’t do what I want!!!!  Implementing the aid of the Zemanta tool seemed to be a step in the right direction….sort of.  Yay!  I can freely steal other people’s pics and let them worry about the copyright and credit.  But, as neato as it seems,-and I do appreciate having it at my disposal-it still won’t do all the work for me….sigh….

The question of how to organize the page and make it look attractive, but not too busy still remains.  I want it to look clean and sharp.  Not like the musty overcrowded aisles of a second hand store.  The ultimate goal is to be read of course, but I want to include just enough shiny clicky things for all viewers, regardless of their attention span.  The  current article has to be good enough for you as the reader to want to see more.  That is my job as a writer.  But, giving you more to see, that has the same slant, tone or feel, is my job as a blog builder.

I figure if you enjoy reading what I write, then you will also enjoy reading what I read, and so I most definitely want to share it, and bring your attention to something fabulous you may not have seen otherwise.

If you are only here to see how bad it looks now, that’s okay too. Your presence is much appreciated, and I hope you will continue to check on me, and watch me get all growed up.

So, here I am, at the end of yet another piece, with no clear cut answer, except that a blog, much like writing itself, is not a static art form.  It is and will continue to be a fluid enterprise.  Ever evolving.  Looks like I can at least pick a good title.

Please stay tuned for Part 3,  as I appear to know so damn much that you can’t live without hearing.  In the meantime, please share your experiences with the nuts and bolts of giving your blog it’s look and feel–Thanks!!!

  1. I’m using Oxygen also! After using the default WP 2011, and then some other one I forget, and then Fresh and Clean. One thing you’ll notice is that putting a YouTube video in a comment is just cutting and pasting the link, but if you want to put it in a post, it takes more steps. Why! Grrrr! And it seems like you’ll never learn all the stuff.

That’s why I hired a team of orangutans to do my editing and formatting for me!

  2. Orangutans? Brilliiant! Your use of the Oxygen theme has had me grrring all weekend over adding a background picture. I love yours! I can’t seem to make mine work the way I want to. Any tips on that from your primate brain trust?

  3. One tip is: When ripping a picture to use, choose a medium pic and tile it, and experiment with left and right. That way, you’ll see the left half on the left, and the right half on the right with no leftovers, in a good resolution, instead of stretching it…

    I mean, no.

  4. So true and so funny -! You made me chuckle because those are my experiences too … it was all trial and error and countless hours spent reading tutorials on WP! And you are right; blogging is indeed ever evolving enterprise … just like writing or any other form of self-expression.

  5. Hard lesson in formatting today. A post I had worked on a lot and thought was quite good went under the radar, as the time stamp was incorrect. As soon as I hit publish, it said “published 13 hours ago”. Bummer. I don’t know how that happened, but I hope it can be avoided in the future

  6. I started my blog in frustration too. I still haven’t spent a lot of time with the look of my blog (and that probably shows). I just want to write and post photos that correlate with the writing content. I’m not after a big reader base. Mostly, I share my life and work here with like-minded people. I try to have a positive and encouraging message.

I like your blog for your unique writing style and for your hilarious sense of humor. You give me great belly laughs… and that, my friend, is not something many are gifted with! I think it’s fun to watch people’s blogs evolve over time. We can all relate to the frustration of getting it just right… and is it ever, really done? I hope not… for we are forever creating!!

    • Thank you so much for your comments!!! I really appreciate it. I do like this theme. I just figured out how to put the stickys at the top. It gives me a chance to repost some of my old favorites that new readers may have missed–thanks for reading them! 🙂

Well.....let's hear it!
